Watch: European captain Luke Donald tees off at Bethpage Course, scouts site of 2025 Ryder Cup
Erik Williams-USA TODAY Sports

Almost eight months after lifting the Ryder Cup in Rome, the preparations for the next event have already started from the European side. This week, captain Luke Donald was spotted scouting the site of the 2025 tournament, the Bethpage Course in New York and teed off with vice-captain Edoardo Molinari .

Team Europe had a dominating performance in the 2023 edition and delivered a huge blow to their rivals, Team USA on Day 1. Despite a late comeback, the Americans were unable to recover from the early damage and ended up losing by a score of 16.5-11.5.

After this great victory, there were questions regarding whether Luke Donald should continue as their captain or not. The name of the 2017 Masters Champion, Sergio Garcia, was also thrown in the mix as a potential replacement for him. However, he eventually decided to stay as captain and agreed to lead the team once again in 2025.

Taking to his Instagram account, the Englishman posted a picture of himself standing at the entry point of the course. Through the caption, he informed that he was “scoping” out the course.

The Bethpage Black is famous for being one of the toughest courses in the world of golf. It though has hosted some major events before with Donald taking part in two of them. In 2002, he finished 18 at the U.S. Open before failing to make the cut in the same event in 2009.

A video of Donald teeing off against Molinari was then shared by the official X account of Ryder Cup Europe. “No first tee nerves here” the account wrote while posting the clip on social media.

Speaking for the preparations, Team USA is yet to appoint a leader. After the loss in Italy, Zach Johnson was sacked as the team captain. Following this development, there had been talks about Tiger Woods being named as the captain. However, so far no decision has been made by the PGA of America.

Will Jon Rahm and Tyrrell Hatton be part of Team Europe at 2025 Ryder Cup?

Since their shocking moves to LIV Golf, one question that has been on the minds of fans is whether Jon Rahm and Tyrrell Hatton be part of Team Europe at 2025 Ryder Cup. Last year, players who had left the European players who had left the DP World Tour to join the Saudi-funded league were ineligible for the selection.

Rahm stunned the world in December 2023 when he left the PGA Tour for a record $600 million. He was soon appointed as the captain of a newly formed team Legion XIII which included Hatton, who jumped ships for a reported fee for a $60 million.

According to new DP World Tour CEO Guy Kinnings, any golfer who is still a member of the DP World can play in the Ryder Cup. They though will have to pay fines and accept the sanctions that will be placed upon them.

If a player is European and is a member of the DP World Tour and abides by the rules in place, he is eligible. If you don’t get a release there are sanctions, so a player must accept those sanctions and if he accepts the penalties, there is no reason why a player who has taken LIV membership and maintained his DP World Tour membership could not qualify or be available for Ryder Cup selection.

Guy Kinnings said in an interview as per Golf Digest.

However, Kinnings further claimed that a player will need to pay a minimum of four DP World tour events. If Rahm and Hatton are able to make four appearances and serve their suspensions, they will be eligible for selection.

Given their LIV Golf schedule and participation in the major championships, it will be interesting to see if Rahm and Hatton can find time to play on the DP World Tour. The Spaniard on his part has expressed his wish on all tours and is patiently waiting to get a green signal from the tours.
